Special rules exist for tracking devices and smart luggage. Good news: most common trackers are allowed!
AirTags & Bluetooth Trackers:
β PERMITTED active in checked baggage IF:
- β€0.3g lithium metal OR β€2.7Wh lithium ion
- Uses only Low Energy Bluetooth (BLE)
- This is a SPECIFIC EXCEPTION to the "device must be OFF" rule
Common Trackers (All Allowed):
- Apple AirTag: ~0.1g Li (well under 0.3g limit)
- Tile trackers: Similar small batteries
- Samsung SmartTag: Uses CR2032 (~0.09g Li)
- Chipolo: Uses CR2032
Smart Luggage Rules:
Smart luggage = suitcases with built-in batteries (USB charging, GPS, motors, scales, etc.)
| Battery Type | Carry-on | Checked | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| β€0.3g Li or β€2.7Wh | β Yes | β Yes | Small tracker/lock batteries |
| >2.7Wh, REMOVABLE | β Yes | β Yes* | Battery must be removed for check-in |
| >2.7Wh, NOT removable | β FORBIDDEN | β FORBIDDEN | Cannot fly at all! |
*When checking smart luggage with removable battery >2.7Wh:
- Remove the battery before check-in
- Carry the battery in cabin baggage
- The luggage itself can be checked
Common Smart Luggage Batteries:
- Away Carry-On: ~36Wh (removable) β
- Rimowa Electronic Tag: Small battery β
- Self-driving suitcases: Often >100Wh β οΈ Check specs!
Why These Rules?
- Small batteries (trackers) have minimal fire risk
- Larger batteries in hold baggage = fire hazard
- Non-removable batteries can't be separated if there's an issue
- Cabin crew can't fight hold fires effectively
OnFlyGo Tip: When shipping electronics with attached trackers, document:
- Tracker model and battery specs
- That tracker uses BLE only
- Battery Wh/g rating if available
