Lithium batteries are common in electronics but pose fire risks. IATA has strict rules for air transport.
Two Types:
- Lithium-ion (Li-ion): Rechargeable, found in laptops, phones, power banks
- Lithium metal: Non-rechargeable, found in watches, cameras, some medical devices
Key Measurement: Watt-hours (Wh)
- Formula: Wh = Voltage (V) Γ Amp-hours (Ah)
- Example: 3.7V Γ 5Ah = 18.5Wh
- Usually printed on battery label
General Rules:
- Batteries in devices: Carry-on or checked (carry-on preferred)
- Spare batteries: CARRY-ON ONLY
- Damaged/recalled batteries: PROHIBITED
- Terminals must be protected (tape or case)
Why Carry-On?
- Cabin crew can respond to fires
- Hold fires are harder to detect/fight
- Passenger can monitor device
